A smaller outfit, coming from the other direction

Kingston has no shortage of bin companies, and we'll be straight with you: we're not the biggest one on the list. We're a family-run yard out in Prince Edward County that runs east along the lake, and what that buys you is a phone answered by someone who knows the job rather than a slot in a dispatch queue.

If you've had the experience of booking a bin, getting a four-hour window, and then chasing somebody when it doesn't turn up — that's the thing we're built to be the opposite of. Small has costs and small has benefits. The benefit is that when something changes, there's a person to change it with.

Kingston jobs come in a few reliable shapes

• Student and rental turnover. Kingston runs on a lease calendar, and the end of it leaves furniture, mattresses and everything nobody wanted to move. These are volume jobs on a hard date — exactly what a roll-off is for, and worth booking ahead because everyone needs one the same week.
• Limestone-era renovations. Downtown and through the older wards, the housing stock is genuinely old. Plaster, lath, old flooring and a roof on its third layer generate far more volume than people budget for.
• Estate and downsizing clear-outs. Whole-house jobs where a family has a weekend and decades of contents to work through.
• West-end and suburban work. Bigger lots, garages, basements, decks coming off — the driveway-friendly end of the business, usually an 8 or a 14.

The five sizes

Downtown and through the older streets, the 8 yard is usually the right call — those driveways are narrow, some are shared, and a bin that blocks the neighbour in creates a second problem. A student-house clear-out generally wants the 14; a full reno or an estate job, the 18 or 20.

The 5 yard is rubble, dirt and fill only. Concrete, brick, patio stone and soil hit a weight limit long before they fill anything bigger, so heavy material gets its own bin. Describe what's coming out and we'll size it honestly, including telling you when a smaller bin will do.

Worth asking about before you book

Two things save everyone a wasted trip. First, where the bin is going — a narrow downtown driveway, a shared laneway, a slope, low branches or overhead wires all change what we can put down. Second, timing: if your job has a fixed end date, say so when you call rather than when the bin is full.

And if you're in the west end, Amherstview or Bath, that's a shorter run for us and worth mentioning — you're closer to our side of the lake than the city is.
